majority of teenagers and even younger children these days have technology as a large part of their lives. They might have their own computer and cell phone that they spend hours a day on. One of the forms of stress that teenagers and children need to deal with today that was not an issue a couple of decades ago is cyber bullying. This is when a message is created using the Internet, a phone, or other technological device for the purpose of embarrassing or emotionally hurting another person.
There are many different ways that a person can be affected by cyber bullying. If they are at home they might see an embarrassing picture of them posted on a website like Facebook. Or there could be a message made on a site like this that contains a rumor or lie. Some teenagers are harassed more directly and receive text messages from anonymous numbers or emails from unknown people. One of the best things about the Internet is that people can get information about anything from celebrity gossip to new apartment listings in a matter of minutes. But this also means that people can send out messages that should not have been said.
One of the major issues surrounding cyber bullying today is that teenagers, especially those who are doing this sort of thing to others, don't see it as a big deal. They believe that sending an inappropriate photoshopped picture of a classmate is funny more than it is hurtful. Many people are encouraged by their friends to participate in this form of bullying and believe that they will never get caught or in trouble for the things that they are doing.
If you're working at a school or have a teenager of your own than this is definitely an issue that you need to be aware of today. If you are a teenager then the best thing that you can do is speak out against this sort of thing happening in your school. You can help to stop the spreading of hurtful messages and can report those who are bullying others. This is an issue that needs to be addressed in schools across the country.
